Motorola Two Way Radios

While there were a myriad of developments along the way that eventually led to wireless devices like Motorola two way radios, one of the most significant occurrences was in the 1920s. During that decade, William P. Rutledge, Commissioner of the Detroit Police Department, implored his department to carry out pioneering experiments to broadcast radio messages to receivers in police cars.

Police Communication Like We Have with Motorola two Way Radios Today

The department installed the first land mobile radio telephone system for police car dispatch in 1921. The system, according to a story in the Detroit News, was similar to the present-day paging systems. It was one-way transmission only, and the patrolmen had to stop at a wire-line telephone station to call back in. “On April 7, 1928, the first voice-based radio mobile system went operational," according to the newspaper. “Although the system was still one way, its effectiveness was immediate and dramatic." Then came Motorola two way radios.

The FCC and Its Effect on Motorola Two Way Radios

Next on the horizon of developments associated with wireless technology was the creation of the Federal Communications Commission in 1934. The FCC was tasked with not only regulating the landline telephone business, but also managing the radio spectrum. The FCC was supposed to grant licenses that were in the “public interest, convenience, and necessity." That also contributed to the development of Motorola two way radios.

Applying to the Public Safety Sector Like Motorola Two Way Radios Do

Critics maintained that the FCC had the power to spark the development of wireless technology solutions for the private sector by unleashing spectrum, but instead chose only to apply its energy to the public safety sector. No matter, World War II would provide the necessary launching pad for commercial interests like Motorola two way radios.
